  Graduates say……

“ There’s nothing like it waking up happy, going out enjoying yourself without drink or drugs. Honestly it’s unreal. The ultimate buzz.”

"It was too painful to look at all the damage I’d done and I didn’t want to believe I could do these things to the people I love when I picked up drugs. But the more I shared the way I felt it seemed to get better .”

Joan tells of alcoholic hell

Suffering from chronic alcoholism, Joan's life was in ruins when she sought help from Pierpoint.

A divorced mother of three with mounting financial problems, she had already attempted suicide as desperate bid to escape her "living hell".

Earlier efforts to put down the bottle had failed, including detoxification and psychiatric treatment.

Constantly suffering the DTs and fits Joan was so physically ill she knew she had to stop drinking or die - but how?

That's when she turned to Pierpoint.

"When I came to Female Focus I thought it wasn't going to work - but through counselling they showed me I had a choice and gave me freedom," said Joan.

During counselling sessions Joan relived the abuse and violence she had experienced at the hands of her ex-husband - treatment which had led to fifteen years of alcoholism.

"By the constant care I received at Female Focus I was able to build up my self esteem and self- worth," said Joan.

"I discovered that I could be the person I was meant to be before the booze took over. I couldn't function without it and I couldn't function with it.

"If I hadn't been lucky enough to find Pierpoint I would be dead."

Now recovering in Pierpoint's extended Care Home, Holly Lodge, Joan attends part-time college courses and visits her three children, aged 10, 16 and 23 regularly as she begins to rebuild her life.

"The kids aren't ashamed of me being here, they're proud that I've tackled the problem. Alcoholism is a family illness - they've got to recover too."

Irene tells of zombie life

Irene's children prayed for her to die.So desperate was her drug doped condition that, she says, they just couldn't bear to see her.

"I was like the walking dead - a zombie ," said Irene, a woman in her forties who became addicted to the prescribed drug Temazipan.

"Originally I was given drugs to help me sleep. The more I took the better I felt. The doctor would prescribe them but I was also getting them from other places." said Irene.

Divorced with two daughters in their twenties and a 16 year old son Irene's life had become a nightmare for all the family.

"It was a living hell with no end to it in sight," she said. "I used to hate the sounds of birds and would drive around at night with the car lights off, in case someone saw me. I was brought up a Catholic and thought God was punishing me.

"Now I know that I have got an addictive personality and I know I have to learn to live with it - it's learning to live a new life, taking it step by step, and without the help of treatment I have received at Female Focus I couldn't have done it. It teaches you that you can take control of your life."
