About Alcohol Detox
Alcohol withdrawal can be a very unpleasant process and medically dangerous in some circumstances. Withdrawal from alcohol should be carried out under medical supervision either at home, if appropriate or, more usually, in the safety of a specialist alcohol detox clinic such as DetoxPlus. DetoxPlus has been providing safe inpatient Detox from alcohol now for over 17 years and has specially trained and experienced nurses on duty 24 hours a day as well as a team of experienced support workers, who know what you are going through.
Following a safe detox alcoholism can then be taken control of with a programme of rehabilitation for alcohol, which you can work through yourself at home or you can undertake our specialist programme of rehab for alcohol recovery.
The detoxification process is well supported by our specialist prescribing Detox doctors and our teams of nurses, support workers and therapists, some of whom are themselves in long-term recovery.
For ALCOHOL, we normally use a Librium (Chlordiazepoxide) detoxification protocol.
Admission into treatment
You, your loved one or employee will be assessed pre- admission and then again prior to commencing Detox, to determine the appropriate Librium dose, based on the client’s withdrawal symptoms, utilising CIWA-Ar (Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment of Alcohol Scale) the Client’s height, weight and how much Alcohol is normally used by the Client.
If the client has a medical reason for not being given a Librium detox (e.g. if the client has liver failure) our G.P’s will consider suitable alternatives.
We safeguard against alcohol withdrawal seizures by prescribing Carbamazepine (Tegretol) which is used to minimise the risk of such seizures. In addition the person undergoing detox will have the opportunity of benefiting from Pabrinex I.M (high potency vitamins) on a daily basis for 5 days followed by oral Thiamine and Vitamin B co strong daily for the remainder of the detox period and for 2 weeks after the person has completed their alcohol Detox. All aspects of the medication regime will be discussed with the person and fully explained at all times.
All females are pregnancy tested prior to any dose of any medication being given. If a female Client is pregnant and this is known prior to the Client being admitted, a letter from the client’s Consultant Obstetrician will be required to confirm that it is safe to commence detoxification prior to the client’s admission.
In addition to the Medicated Detoxification, the Client will have the benefit of:
Access to Auricular Acupuncture to help relieve anxiety and stress
Nurse, support worker and Addiction Therapist access 24 hours per day
Integration into the community of your peers and time to explore long-term recovery
Herbal Teas to help facilitate normal sleep patterns
Peer group support at all times
Massage Therapy to help relieve any aches and pains
